It is said that you can put a frog in a pan of room temperature water, slowly turn up the heat, and the frog will remain in the water until it is literally cooked to death. It happens so slowly the frog doesn’t even know it is being killed. My research has shown this to be just a legend, but has often been told as an analogy to how things can change so slowly you don’t even know it, until it’s too late.
Christianity in America is a frog in a pot. The church has been comfortable, like the frog in a pan of room-temperature water. But slowly the heat has been turned up, as Christian values are maligned by the very culture that should be shaped by those values. Perhaps it began when prayer was removed from schools. Perhaps it began with Roe v Wade, when abortion became legal, thus killing millions of unborn babies (Herod ordering all the babies in Bethlehem to be murdered in hopes of killing the King of the Jews?). Perhaps it continued when graduating seniors were told they could no longer pray at graduation, or even mention the Name of Jesus in commencement remarks. Perhaps it continued when it became culturally unacceptable to criticize homosexuality as sin, and continued even further when courts ruled laws against homosexual marriages were unconstitutional. And perhaps it continued when governments told Christian pastors they could pray at public meetings, but they could not pray “in the Name of Jesus”, or when some military chaplains were told they could not pray in the Name of Jesus. And the list goes on.
I do not intend to write a diatribe of events that have eroded the foundations upon which this nation was established. I do, hope, however, that Christians will realize that it’s time for the frog to jump out of the kettle. What began as a subtle attack on Christian values is fast becoming an all-out war on those values. And many Christians are sitting in the kettle, ignoring what is happening, content to allow the heat to be turned up.
Come on church…it’s time to JUMP!
