Greetings in Jesus Name!
First of all, to all of you who have supported us with your prayers and your dollars as we continue our work in Peru, a big THANK YOU! I am looking at trip number seventeen this June, and we’ve been blessed by our continuity of ministry in Peru to see the fruits of our labors. You have played such an important part in our work in Peru, and Marsha and I are truly grateful.
As you may know from my previous Peru newsletters, the Evangelical Church of Christ of Peru is experiencing tremendous challenges to its future. At least 30 churches have left the denomination over what the leaders of the separatist movement describe as doctrinal issues. Two of the issues are: 1)The Small Group Ministry is not biblical; and 2)God does not want His people to prosper.
The real issue, however, is control. The leaders of the churches that left the denomination are the denomination’s former leaders, who want to return to the church’s old traditions of legalism. Additionally, the former leaders don’t want to release leadership to the next generation, but want to hang on. Many young pastors have left the denomination over the years because the old leaders won’t release them.
As I have been praying about my planned trip to Peru in June, I have sensed that I should accept the invitation of the denomination’s leadership to attend upcoming conference June 9-11. The president, Pastor Eli Chavez, has stressed that the leaders consider me their spiritual father, and that my presence will help bring restoration to their ministry. For that reason I will make a shorter-than-usual trip to attend the conference. My tentative plans are to leave around June 7 and return around June 13.
Your prayers and financial support help make our ministry in Peru a success. Thank you, again, for your previous support. And thank you in advance for your support for the upcoming trip.
